What is Watson Health Payer and Provider?

Hospitals typically are not managed individually. They are a part of a larger network with many different datasets that must be managed and maintained. The Payer and Provider offerings from Watson Health offer a powerful group of visualizations that enable Business Leaders, Managers, Data Analysts and Data Scientists to customize metrics where and how they need them so that they can stay focused on their parts of the network in real-time.

Metrics include financial balancing between different populations of patients through insurance, mitigating risk, and predicting outcomes.

My role and business objective

Journey map for Payer and Provider personas

As an individual contributor, my role was to improve the user experience of the Cost and Care Insights and Performance Manager dashboards. This included a heuristic evaluation of the existing dashboards as well as review of previous research. The previous research included journey maps of individual personas who use the dashboards for different purposes. This allowed me to gain an understanding of which pieces of data were most important so that I could create a hierarchy in the data.

Common user experience principles of data visualization were taken into consideration like placing the most important information “above the fold,” and minimizing cognitive load where possible.

Although these dashboards do not utilize AI, it was important to create interactive elements that allowed me to simplify the metrics by placing secondary information in tooltips and drilldowns.

My Impact

After presenting the heuristic evaluation and new designs with before and after screens, management decided to templatize the dashboards and use them as a guide for the Payer and Provider portfolio. This was due to the fact that the legacy dashboards did not employ best practices and novel ways of viewing the data. The visual design and user experience left room for vast improvement.
